Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have a piano at home?
It is very important that students have a piano when they are taking lessons, because they will need to practice at home.
Can I use a keyboard to start piano lesson?
I prefer my students to have an acoustic piano. For special circumstances (lack of space, mobility, living in apartment or condo), a full sized (88 keys) digital piano with weighted-key is the best option to have. While keyboard is probably the closest thing that resemble a piano, it is actually quite different, the key weight, the range of notes, the sensitivity, and it is quiet hard to make a different touch and dynamic gradation on keyboard keys. However, if you already own a keyboard, students are able to take piano lessons though after one year of lessons, students need to look into purchase of piano.
Where can I purchase a violin?
Violins come in “fractional sizes” (4/4. 3/4, 1/2, 1/8, 1/16). The 4/4 is a full size, suitable for nearly all adults. If you are not sure if the violin is right for you or your child, you may have the option of renting one. Usually, renting a violin is the best option for children, as they still grow and may need to change violin sizes many times until they are ready to use a full size.
I have a 3- year-old who is very interested in music, is he/she ready to take lessons?
While it is good to have music interest in a very young age, however very often they have not developed finger independence, motoric skills and hand coordination. It is best to wait until your child is older.
I am a busy parent, so going to all my children’s lessons is tough. Are you able to do in-home lessons?
Currently most of my students take lessons at my home studio, it would be easier to get selections of music books, music theory worksheets and games, and materials needed for the lesson that day from my collection. There will be an additional charge for travelling to student's place depending upon their location.
Do we need to purchase books for the lesson?
Yes. You will require music books and sheet music as I see fit. See lesson policy. I try to keep costs to a minimum, and when needed will ask you to print free sheet music from the internet.
What type of music do you teach?
I am a classical pianist. However, I teach a combination of styles according to the student's goals, interests and needs. I will expand my student's repertoire and expose them to a wide variety of music styles.
Do I have to practice at home?
Yes. You will need to practice at least 5 days out of the week. For young students, parents will need to occasionally help with practice. Piano lessons are a big commitment, but worth it if you are willing to put forth the effort.
May I take lessons twice a month, or every once in a while?
I’m sorry, I don’t do that. I believe lessons taken on this basis are not very productive. Music studies may take years to complete and it needs regular schedules.
